Algren, who made the city of Chicago his "trade," is known for his two novels: Man With a Golden Arm, and A Walk on the Wild Side. Algren did one of the first serious fictional studies of drug addiction, and his book: Chicago City on the Make is considered a classic view of a city famed for its architecture, politics, and history. The Nelson Algren Committee holds an annual Algren birthday party, and awards, on a yearly basis, the Nelson Algren Committee awards to community activists. Previous recipients have included filmmaker Jon Jost, and political organiser Don Rose. 2004 will see the fifteenth annual Algren awards event, and birthday party.
